Rethinking Evangelism
To some, the word “evangelism” conjures up the stereotypical image of a person on a street corner, shouting Bible verses. Many think that being an “evangelist” paints them with that brushstroke. But that bears little resemblance to the truth.
The truth is that Jesus asks us to live our lives in such a way that points people to Him.
Evangelism = Words, Works and Wonders
- WORDS – What we say
- WORKS – How we act
- WONDERS – What God does
Evangelism is a combination of the three, as God works through us to draw people to Himself.
Engel’s Scale
This scale was originally developed by Jim Engel, at Wheaton College, and adapted by Clive Calver. It is helpful in reminding us that people are on a journey - from possessing no interest in God, to hopefully surrendering their lives to Christ. And then the journey continues as we grow in faith. People may debate the use of numbers or the appropriate order of the steps, but the scale is helpful for individual Christ-followers in recognizing where they are most comfortable in talking with people who have not yet surrendered their lives to Christ, and in recognizing where their friends might be on the journey. Our hope is that we might be a community that celebrates all the steps on the journey as we pray that many more surrender their lives to Jesus.
It’s Not Just Me. It’s Us
For some reason, evangelism is one of the few areas of church life that we assume an individual needs to be good at everything! We were made to be the body of Christ; we need each other! So if you have friends asking questions about Jesus, and you are good at hospitality and a friend from church is good at talking, get together and see what God does! If you need more help, why not invite them to “Answers, Over Easy”?
