We have the opportunity to demonstrate the love of Jesus to students and families in the Derby public schools in need of back-to-school clothing assistance. Our Derby Campus, through Walnut Hill’s Church in Action ministry, has provided $100 in assistance to 150 students in the Derby public schools over the years, totaling $15,000. This year, the goal is to assist 100 students. To do that, $10,000 needs to be raised. The small campus has already raised over $2,000 from those who regularly attend the campus and begun a Go Fund Me page to solicit donations from the community. They need our help to reach their goal and be able to demonstrate the love of Jesus to 100 students in need.
The Derby school district has a minority population that reaches almost 50%. The district has a high level of poverty as measured by the number of students receiving free or reduced lunches with 7 out of 10 students qualifying district-wide, a level of participation which far exceeds the state average. With so many families struggling to put food on the table for their children it should come as no surprise that many students need back-to-school clothing assistance in the school district. Each year, only the students most in need are referred by the district’s social services professional. Each year, the number of students referred for assistance grows.
God’s Love Demonstrated
The campus’s last assistance provided back-to-school clothing to 70 out of just over 100 students referred. Without assistance, these students would likely to return to school in the same clothes and footwear they left with the year before. Except now, these clothes and footwear are too small and severely worn. It is wonderful to put smiles on the faces of parents and students and to see their excitement and after receiving assistance.
